FBI agents raided an apartment in Manhattan on Wednesday, in what the agency called a “criminal investigation.”
The raid took place as part of a nationwide crackdown on the so-called “spy” finance app Amazon.
The app allows users to send and receive money via encrypted messaging apps.FBI agents said the officers seized cash and a large quantity of electronic devices, as well as a copy of the app.
A representative for the FBI declined to comment on the raid, but said in a statement: “We take this matter very seriously.
As a matter of policy, we do not comment on ongoing investigations.”
In a separate development, the FBI arrested an employee at Amazon.com on Monday, and charged her with wire fraud and money laundering.
The FBI also raided the home of an employee of a different company, according to an agency news release.FBI officials have previously targeted companies like Yahoo Finance and Google Finance, and have shut down dozens of companies.
